Points to Percentage Calculator
Track an overall grade by summing the points you earned across every assignment. Enter each assignment's name, points earned, and points possible. The calculator adds them up, divides earned by possible, and gives you an overall percentage and letter grade. This is the most accurate way to total a class grade when assignments are scored in raw points instead of weighted percentages.
How it works
Summing points naturally weights each assignment by how many points it was worth:
Total earned = sum of all "points earned" values
Total possible = sum of all "points possible" values
Percentage = (Total earned ÷ Total possible) × 100 This is different from averaging percentages — a 100-point midterm pulls your average more than a 10-point quiz, which matches how most classes actually grade.
Example calculation
Three assignments: Quiz 18/20, Midterm 76/100, Project 45/50. Total earned = 18 + 76 + 45 = 139. Total possible = 20 + 100 + 50 = 170. Percentage = (139 ÷ 170) × 100 = 81.8%, which is a B−.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert points to a percentage?
Add up the points you earned across all assignments, divide by the total points possible across those same assignments, and multiply by 100. That gives you your overall percentage.
Is this different from averaging percentages?
Yes — and it usually gives a more accurate result. Averaging percentages treats every assignment as equally important. Summing points naturally weights each assignment by how many points it was worth.
When should I use this instead of weighted averages?
Use this whenever assignments are scored in raw points without explicit category weights. Use a weighted calculator when categories like "Tests 50%, Homework 30%" are spelled out.
Can I add as many assignments as I want?
Yes — click "Add assignment" to insert as many rows as you need. Remove rows you don't need with the × button.
What if my points possible is zero?
A row with zero points possible is skipped (you can't divide by zero). The calculator will still work as long as at least one row has points possible greater than zero.
Does extra credit work?
Yes — if an assignment lets you earn more than the points possible, just enter the actual earned value. Your percentage may go above 100%.
Is this calculator free?
Yes, completely free with no signup or limits.
